The CREST project, Climate Resilient Coast, aims to gain insight into physical coastal processes such as waves, tide, currents, sediment dynamics, wind, ... And in the role of these processes in ensuring coastal protection and natural resilience of the Flemish coast in relation to climate change and major international developments. The CREST consortium consists of ten partner institutes from the academic world, the Flemish government and the private sector. The project is part of the Strategic Basic Research Program (SBO) of the Innovation and Entrepeneurship agency 'VLAIO' of the Flemish government. The forthcoming CREST Midterm Conference on November 23, 2017 will not only provide an overview of the current research results, but also intends to approach as many potential end users as possible in order to gather ideas of future research directions within CREST.
In addition to a presentation of the interim results by the CREST partners and demos of several monitoring devices, two international experts are invited for a keynote. Themes that will be discussed include the improved insight into coastal sandy transport, how sand volumes move during storms (underwater and on the beach), the effects of overtopping water on dikes and harbor dams, how old data we can help us understand today's coastal processes, how flood emergency planning will look in the future, how measurement campaigns provide more insight into what is happening in the field, the formulation of climate scenarios for our coast. The international experts share their knowledge and experience about the 'Zandmotor project' in the Netherlands, and on the latest developments in understanding coastal processes using calculation models.
Furthermore, during the midterm conference, CREST invites you to share ideas and opinions about how and where the research in the second half of the project can be modified and to think together about new research opportunities after 2019. In addition to the input of engineers, one expects to hear the needs and concerns of as many potential end users as possible, for example, coastal towns (sand nuisance, beach concessions, beach sports clubs), marine biologists (dunes and foreshore research), coastal security policymakers and the 'Complex Project Kustvisie' (the successor to the former Flanders Bays Project), industry (consultancies and dredgers), people concerned in emergency planning and insurance (floods), coast guides, ...
Do you think that natural changes to the coast or coastal protection measures on the beach may have an impact on your work or the functioning of your organisation or company? Then register your presence before November 17 through the online registration form. Because of the presence of international experts, the language of the conference is English.
