With a Marine Robotics Centre, VLIZ wants to provide Flemish scientists and their (inter)national partners, as well as other stakeholders in Flanders, access to the latest technologies in marine research. To achieve this, two new robotics instruments have been purchased that are complementary to the already available underwater robot Genesis.
More specifically, it concerns an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) that uses wave energy for its propulsion and solar panels for the power supply to the measuring instruments and an AUV (Autonomous Surface Vehicle) that can perform measurements of the water column, the seabed and the subsurface. In order to test this new infrastructure, a test pool, directly supplied with seawater, will also be constructed in the Marine Station Ostend.
