Looking back at the VLIZ Marine Science Day 2019

The 19th edition of the VLIZ Marine Science Day 2019 of 13 March brought together some 400 marine scientists, students and companies in Bredene for a day full of inspiring presentations and demonstrations. The VLIZ Marine Science Day (VMSD2019) continued its tradition as being the information and networking moment of the year for Belgian marine students, scientists and companies. If you like to look back at this event, take a look at our VMSD19 retrospective page. You will find all the videos of the oral presentations, the abstracts and photos, and all the information about the award winners.

The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) was the central theme throughout the program this year. Julian Barbiere of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission came to propose the Ocean Decade, and called the marine community present at VMSD19 to contribute to its preparation and deployment. Presenters and participants were also challenged to reflect on how they can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with their marine research and ocean data. As usual, students and scientists also had the opportunity to meet with marine and maritime employers through the ' Meet the Company ' segment. The Compendium for Coast and Sea 2018 and The Coastal Portal were also represented. All its latest products were exhibited and visitors were given the opportunity to discover them interactively.

From VLIZ we would like to thank all the participants for making this day a highlight for the marine sciences in Flanders and surroundings! We hope that everyone will be there again next year and that they can convince missing colleagues that they should not miss this day. Keep an eye on the announcements (VLIZ awards and abstracts) coming this autumn for the next edition of the VMSD. In 2020, the 20th VLIZ Marine Science Day will receive a big birthday bow.
