An estimated 35,000 tonnes of dumped ammunition can be found on the Paardenmarkt, a sandbank just off the coast of Knokke. Although there is no danger to the marine environment or public health to date, the Government of Flanders wants to test in the project 'Removal of dumped war ammunition in the North Sea’ the innovative way in which this munitions dump could be disposed of safely and time- and cost-efficiently.
Companies and research groups are invited to participate in the market consultation, which will take place on 10 October 2019 in Brussels. They are expected to bring with them knowledge and experience that can be useful for the monitoring, detection, localisation and retrieval of underwater unexploded ordnance (UXO). They are especially looking for (international) market players in the field of (general) offshore works, underwater surveillance and monitoring systems and robotics, among others specifically aimed (or applicable) at monitoring, detection/localisation and retrieval of underwater UXO.
