Today's society depends to a large extent on the ocean. The ocean provides us with important ecosystem services such as food supply, climate regulation and oxygen production. At European scale alone, the ocean's various ecosystem services generate about 566 billion euros and provide jobs for almost 3.5 million people. However, these ecosystem services are under increasing pressure (overfishing, global warming, pollution, etc.), making it crucial that they are managed sustainably.

How to shape a global sustainable blue economy and how this can lead to clean seas and oceans by 2030 is the theme of the high-level conference organised by the European Parliament and the European Commission in Brussels on 19 March 2019. The conference will be structured around the following three themes:

1. 1. Shaping global ocean management for the future

2. 2. A sustainable blue economy, reducing pressure on the ocean

3. 3. Achieving a healthy sea and ocean by 2030

It will also highlight the results of the efforts already undertaken by the EU in these areas with a view to maintaining a sustained commitment on these fronts.
