The main objectives of our group are scientific activities related to the effects of pollution on the cellular level, using light and electron microscopical, histochemical and cytochemical techniques.
• In the framework of these investigations, special attention has been put onto bio-monitoring of the pollution in Thermaikos and Strymonikos gulfs (Northern Greece). Bio-monitoring techniques, or biomarkers used by our research group are based on structural and functional alterations of various cell organelles of the common mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, such as lysosomes and micronuclei. The studies are conducted both in field, as well as in the laboratory.
• Apart from the application of conventional biomarkers, in our research group investigation is held for the introduction of new biomarkers. Basic research is also conducted, aiming to the clarification of fundamental questions concerning the structure and function of the cell, in relation to marine pollution
