De onderzoeksgroep Argiles, Géochimie et Environnements Sédimentaires (AGEs) van de Universiteit van Luik (ULg) bestudeert Quartaire sedimentrecords waarbij de focus ligt op de oorsprong van de verschillende minerale componenten teneinde de paleo-omgeving en paleo-oceanografische condities te kunnen reconstrueren. Er wordt een multidisciplinaire benadering gehanteerd waarbij sedimentologie, mineralogie (in het bijzonder van de kleien) en geochemie gecombineerd worden om de oorsprong en herkomst van het detritisch materiaal te bepalen, de belangrijkste transportmechanismen te identificeren en de sedimentaire fluxen te kwantificeren.
Specifiek binnen het mariene domein, beschikt AGEs over expertise met betrekking tot de mineralogie en geochemie van Laat-Quartaire mariene sedimenten van uiteenlopende oceanische bekkens (Noord-Atlantische, Arctische en Indische Oceaan, Japanse Zee). De onderzoeksgroep reconstrueert onder meer diepzeestromingen van de Noord-Atlantische en Arctische Oceaan met behulp van de mineralogie en isotopische analyse van sedimenten. Deze studie leidt tot een beter begrip van de relatie tussen de oceaancirculatie en de variabiliteit van het klimaat. Recent onderzoek richt zich eveneens op de reconstructie van het paleo-milieu in kustgebonden omgevingen (bv. de Middellandse kusten van Tunesië en Corsica).
