De rode draad doorheen de verschillende research-thema's van de onderzoeksgroep is de studie van variatie in morfologie, gedrag en life-history kenmerken van gewervelden (zoogdieren en vogels) en ongewervelden ( insecten en weekdieren) voor wat betreft hun patronen en speciatie- en adaptatieprocessen op verschillende niveau's :
1. Op een evolutionaire tijdsschaal worden de verbanden tussen, en binnen verschillende individuen en taxa bestudeerd vanuit een morfologisch, karyologisch, ecologisch, gedragsmatig en biochemisch kader.
2. Op een ecologische tijdsschaal worden populatie-ecologie en levensgeschiedenis-strategieën van verschillende soorten bestudeerd en vergeleken.
3. Inzichten uit deze beide gebieden worden gebruikt bij het opstellen van modellen, o.a. voor het beheer van economisch belangrijke soorten, de ecologie van ziekten en het behoud van de biodiversiteit.
