Abstract |
In this dissertation some genera of red algae belonging to the Ceramiaceae are being studied. The descriptions, figures and photographs may be used in a seaweed flora of the Indian Ocean. A reliable seaweed flora is not available for this area. In 13 years (from 1985) the Laboratory of Botany, especially Prof. Dr. E. Coppejans, managed to collect an enormous amount of seaweed specimens in Kenya, Zanzibar and in the Seychelles. They have been able to collect 4503 specimens in these regions, 300 specimens belonging to the Ceramiaceae. Alphabetical arrangement of the species found in this dissertation: Anotrichium tenue (C. Agardh) Nageli, Balliella crouanioides (Itono) Itono & Tanaka, Centroceras clavulatum (C. Agardh) Montagne, Crouania attenuata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, Crouania minutissima Yamada, Euptilota fergusonii Cotton, Griffithsia heteromorpha Kutzing, Haloplegma duperreyi Montagne, Pleonosporium caribaeum (B0rgesen) R.Norris, Spyridia filamentosa (Wulfen) Harvey, Spyridia hypnoides (Bory de Saint-Vincent) Papenfuss, Wrangelia argus (Montagne) Montagne, Wran gelia penicillata (C. Agardh) C. Agardh. This list is incomplete because only a few genera belonging to the Ceramiaceae have been studied. We have to considerate the patchiness of algal distribution, the number of collection area’s and the amount of specimens that has been collected. Undoubtedly a few, very small epiphytes are missing in our checklist (for example Lejolisia). Most specimens have been collected while wading or snorkeling, most probable we have some species living at greater depths. There are four herbarium specimens (H EC 9451, HEC 10492, HEC 10558, HEC 12190), who are all resembling very much to the genus Euptilota, that I have not been able to determine to which genus they belong to; one specimen (with tetraspores) has been send to H. Stegenga & A. Millar for determination. It would be very useful if more specimens would be preserved as formolated material or to preserve a specimen partly as a herbarium material and partly as formolated material. Next species, that have been studied in this dissertation, have never been found before in the regions that are respectively crossed in the table (see PDF). Until present Episporium centroceratis Mobius has only been reported in Australia and South Africa. In this study E. centroceratis has been found in more than one sample, though al specimens belong to the same place (Nungwi) of collection. |
