EAS Special Publication No. 12 contains part of the papers presented at the international conference of Aquaculture Europe '89 which took place in Bordeaux, France, from October 2nd to 5th, 1989. Besides the international exhibition, the international conference included scientific presentations (round-table discussions, poster sessions, plenary lectures, films, and slideshows) and several addresses by officials. Furthermore, two specialized symposia were organized, one on Sturgeon (Acipenser) by CEMAGREF/AGEDRA and one on Biotechnology in Aquaculture by BIOTECHNICA. The proceedings of these symposia will be published separately by the respective organizers of these events. The contents of the selected posters have been published as short communications in EAS Special Publication No. 10, which was distributed to the participants of Aquaculture Europe '89. Include in that publication are also the abstracts of the review papers and films and slideshows. The contents of the plenary lectures, the syntheses of the round-table discussions on selected topics, and the official addresses have been edited after the conference and are grouped togetehr in the present book. A major concern of the organizers was to disseminate this valuable up-to-date information as soon as possible among the public. The international conference of Aquaculture Europe '89, inserted into a biennial series organized by the European Aquaculture Society, can be considered a success, taking into account the diversity of the scientific and technical presentations. Proof of this is given by: the number of delegates (over 1200 from 50 countries) attending the conference and their assiduity in the meeting rooms; the important participation in the trade show (nearly 120 companies represented) giving rise to a density of visitors, sometimes even considered too high.
