De afdeling Weg- en Waterbouw omvat twee onderzoeksgroepen: 'Coastal Engineering' en 'Bruggen en Wegen'.

De groep 'Coastal Engineering' richt zich op:
  • het ontwerp en de bouw van kustconstructies (voornamelijk golfbrekers en zeedijken), kustverdediging (bescherming van het achterland tegen overstroming door golven en zeespiegelstijging) en de structurele respons van deze constructies op golfbelasting (zoals deklaagstabiliteit, golfoploop en -overslag, poreuze stroming en opbouw van poriëndrukken in de kern van de golfbreker);
  • de interacties tussen waterbewegingen (golven en getijden), met inbegrip van het daaraan gekoppelde sedimenttransport en de kuststructuren (die plaatselijke erosie van de zeebodem kunnen veroorzaken);
  • hernieuwbare golf- en getijdenenergie.


De onderzoeksgroep is actief betrokken in de ontwikkeling van systemen voor het exploiteren van golfenergie en bij het onderzoek naar de interactie-effecten die optreden binnen een park van golfenergieconvertoren. De afdeling heeft ook ruime ervaring met het ontwikkelen en het gebruik van instrumenten voor het meten van stromingen en golven in zeeën, estuaria en rivieren. Finaal is de groep actief in experimentele en numerieke modellering van golfpropagatie en de interactie met kuststructuren.

De onderzoeksmethodologie steunt op het gebruik en de integratie van fysische modellering, numerieke modellering en het uitvoeren van veldmetingen. Daartoe beschikt de onderzoeksgroep over twee fysische golfgoten voor schaalmodelonderzoek, en over verschillende numerieke modellen voor de voortplanting van windgolven (MILDwave, FLOW3D, OpenFOAM) en getijdenstroming (COHERENS). De groep coördineerde het ontwerp en de operationele opstart van de golftank, het Coastal & Ocean Basin (COB), in het Ostend Science park.

In de toekomst zal de groep zich blijvend richten op onderwerpen als kustverdediging (met name kuststructuren) en hernieuwbare energie. De groep was betrokken bij zowel nationale als Europese onderzoeksprojecten over kuststructuren en offshore energieproductie en is lid van verschillende consortia (Marine@UGent, WECANet, Coastlab netwerk).
