De onderzoeksploeg Aquatische Biologie van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (afdeling Kortrijk, Kulak) werd opgericht in 2008. Dit laboratorium voert zowel fundamenteel als toegepast onderzoek naar aquatische micro-organismen in artificiële en natuurlijke wateren. Het onderzoek is uitgebouwd rond drie onderzoekstopics: (1) onderzoek naar de oorzaak van en oplossingen voor eutrofiëring en algenbloeien, zowel in zoetwater als mariene ecosystemen; (2) ontwikkeling van toepassingen van microalgen, bijvoorbeeld voor zuivering van afvalwater, productie van biobrandstof of verwerking in voeding en dierenvoeding. Het onderzoek naar mariene microalgen is vooral toegespitst op het gebruik van soorten als bron van omega-3 vetzuren en nieuwe antioxidanten; (3) fundamenteel onderzoek rond de evolutionaire interactie tussen parasieten en hun ‘gastheren’, waarbij de watervlo Daphnia als modelsysteem gebruikt wordt.
Het door deze groep uitgevoerde mariene onderzoek kan als volgt samengevat worden:
- Studie van de variaties in fytoplanktondiversiteit en -densiteit in het Schelde-estuarium;
- Studies met betrekking tot mariene microalgencultuur.
De groep richt zich op het gebruik van mariene microalgen in duurzame technologieën zoals het vervangen van visolie door algenolie en microalgen als bron van nieuwe natuurlijke producten (antioxidanten, pigmenten). De groep richt zich op verschillende uitdagingen in verband met de productie van microalgen, zoals het kosteneffectief oogsten van microalgen, de ontwikkeling van technieken voor de extractie en verwerking van omega-3 vetzuren uit microalgen en de bestrijding van besmetting van grootschalige culturen door ongedierte.
In het kader van bovenstaand onderzoek werkt de onderzoeksgroep intensief samen met de Landbouwuniversiteit van Athene (Griekenland), IMDEA Energy (Madrid, Spanje), de Nationale Hernieuwbare Energie Laboratoria (Golden, USA), de Nationale Laboratoria Sandia (Albuquerque, USA), de Universiteit van New South Wales (Sydney, Australië), het Koreaans Instituut voor Energieonderzoek (Daejeon, Zuid-Korea), de Federale Universiteit van Rio Grande (Brazilië) en het Instituut voor Technologie en Hogere Studies van Monterrey (Mexico).
