De onderzoeksgroep Evolutionaire Ontwikkelingsbiologie richt zich op de evolutie en ontwikkeling (Evo-Devo) van het skelet van gewervelde dieren. Speciale technieken worden gebruikt voor uiterst gedetailleerde histologische analyse van skeletweefsels. Huidige onderzoeken omvatten moleculaire, histochemische en cytochemische benaderingen die principes van de ontwikkeling van het gewervelde skelet kunnen verduidelijken. Het basisonderzoek van het Evo-Devo-laboratorium richt zich op de evolutie van gewervelde tanden, met zebravis en medaka als experimentele modellen, en op de evolutie van de wervelkolom.

Basiskennis over het skelet bevordert onze toegepaste studies: biomedisch onderzoek en onderzoek naar aquacultuur. Biomedisch onderzoek analyseert zebravis als model voor menselijke skeletaandoeningen, zoals osteoporose en osteogenesis imperfecta (brozebottenziekte), in samenwerking met het Universitair Ziekenhuis van Gent (UZ), de Universiteit van Pavia (Italië) en andere medische faculteiten in heel Europa. Onderzoek naar aquacultuur onderzoekt skeletmisvormingen bij gekweekte vissen, met name Atlantische zalm en andere zalmensoorten. Aan de Universiteit Gent is het Evo-Devo-laboratorium het centrum voor onderzoek naar gekweekte Atlantische zalm. Deze studies worden uitgevoerd in samenwerking met partners in Noorwegen, Canada, Chili en Australië.
