Le centre Interuniversitaire de Biologie marine (CIBIM) est un groupe de recherche intégré associant des Laboratoires de Biologie marine de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles et de l’Université de Mons-Hainaut. Les recherches poursuivies s’intéressent tant à la biologie des organismes marins benthiques qu’à celle des populations qu’ils forment et à l’impact de ces dernières sur leur environnement. Les organismes étudiés sont surtout les larves et les formes postmétamorphiques des invertébrés appartenant au phylum des échinodermes. La finalité des recherches est triple: (A) la compréhension fine du modèle biologique original développé par les échinodermes; (B) la détermination du rôle et du statut des espèces dans les écosystèmes benthiques;(C) l’exploitation à des fins alimentaires des ressources halieutiques échinodermiques.
