De onderzoeksgroep GeoHydrodynamics and Environmental Research (GHER) was vroeger gekend als unité d'Océanographie Physique. De groep richt zich op mariene studies, milieustudies en modellering.
In de jaren 1970 participeerde de GHER in het 'Project Zee' en nam verder deel aan diverse studies in verschillende mariene regio's zoals de Noordzee, de Zwarte Zee, het Aralmeer, de Zuid-Chinese Zee, de Beringzee, de Perzische Golf en de Middellandse Zee. Recente onderzoeksactiviteiten focussen voornamelijk op het samenbrengen van statistische data-analyses en modelleringen in geassimileerde benaderingen, zoals nested coastal models. De verificatie van modellen, met behulp van wavelets en andere geavanceerde statistische instrumenten, en cloud filling gebaseerd op empirische orthogonale functies, vormen andere onderzoekslijnen binnen deze groep.
De onderzoeksgroep participeerde in een groot aantal Europese projecten, zoals EROS2000 en EUROMODEL, waarbinnen de Mediterrane 3D-hydrodynamische modellen, gebaseerd op primitieve vergelijkingen, ontwikkeld werden. Andere voorbeelden zijn MERMAIDS, MODB, MEDAR en SeaDataNet, die leidden tot de uitwerking van de oceanografische databanken en de data-analyse instrumenten. Verder is het GHER-team verantwoordelijk voor de organisatie van het jaarlijks Internationaal Colloquium over Oceaandynamiek te Luik.
