Het laboratoire de Biologie Marine (BMAR) bestudeert voornamelijk de bioluminescentie, maar deed vroeger ook onderzoek naar de mariene biodiversiteit op scheepswrakken op het Belgisch continentaal plat. Deze onderzoekseenheid werkt regelmatig samen met andere universiteiten in de wereld, zoals het Victoria Museum en de universiteiten van Sydney en Perth (Australië), de universiteit van Bergen (Noorwegen), de universiteiten van Goteborg en Lund (Zweden), de universiteit van Otago, Niwa Wekllington (Nieuw-Zeeland), de universiteit van Californië - Santa Barbara Campus (VS), de universiteit van Ryukyus (Japan) en het laboratorium Arago en het Observatoire de Roscoff (Frankrijk). De groep maakt ook deel uit van het Interuniversitair Centrum voor Mariene Biologie (CIBIM).
Het laboratorium verricht onderzoek naar de volgende mariene onderwerpen:
- biodiversiteit van bioluminescentie;
- bioluminescentie bij haaien - trofische ecologie van diepzeehaaien;
- controlemechanismen, functies en evolutie van bioluminescentie;
- oorsprong van mariene lichtgevende verbindingen in stekelhuidigen en andere phyla;
- bioluminescentie bij de pelagische ringworm Tomopteris.
