Research is focused on the ecology and dynamics of marine phytoplankton, in particular the description of environmental tracers for oceanographic/climatic changes, like coccolithophores, harmful algae and others.
Main scientific interests are focus on the dynamics of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in particular the early detection and forecast of toxic events by using sattelite products and both statistical and hidrodynamic models. Other interests are related to marine phytoplankton diversity studies and the development of tools to acess biodiversity in Portuguese waters.
National Focal Point for the EU Water Framework Directive for the Phytoplankton descriptor, responsible for classifying coastal lagoons and estuarine ecossystems.
Representative of Portugal at WGHABD of ICES and since 2007 at the IPHAB, IOC- UNESCO.
