A short review is given of measurements, causes and implications of sea-level rise. Along the Dutch coast not only the mean sea level but also the mean tidal amplitude is changing. The main part of this paper deals with the expected impacts of sea-level rise on the morphology of the Dutch Wadden Sea. A change in the morphology in this area may be of great importance to its ecology. A hypothesis on the relationship between morphological changes and sea-level rise is presented. In addition, preliminary predictions for the development of the Wadden Sea area are given, as well as some general conclusions and recommendations.
