The Celtic Sea acts as a control site for ISECA as it is not subject to eutrophication. The influence of nitrate on primary production was assessed at this site. Comparison of carbon (14C) fixation and nitrate (15NO3) uptake versus irradiance experiments revealed that the proportion of 15NO3 uptake compared to 14C fixed was higher at the seasonal chlorophyll maximum (SCM) than in the upper part of the thermocline where nitrate was depleted. Production fuelled by new nitrate from below the thermocline was estimated to be ~5 - 19 g C m-2, which is around half that expected for the spring bloom. These figures provide a baseline for primary production in the 2-Seas area in the context of eutrophication in the North Sea.
