Description Eens onder de 300 m gaat het continentaal plat over in de continentale helling, bedekt door dikke sedimentwiggen afkomstig van het continent. Regelmatig glijden sedimentpakketten van de continentale helling af door aardbevingen of gewoon omdat ze te dik gestapeld liggen op een steile helling. Grote modderstromen en onderwaterrivieren schuren wel eens diepe canyonkloven uit. Ze verplaatsen soms meer sediment dan een lawine, over meer dan 100 km afstand.
