Description
Data of of fish, invertebrate, and marine mammal observations in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska from 1993-2004. more

The Observer Program database consists of fish, invertebrate, and marine mammal observations collected by fishery biologists while deployed on board commercial fishing vessels or at shoreside processing plants participating in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska groundfish fisheries. This database covers observations from 1993-2004. The specific data components collected are outlined in the Groundfish Observer Manual. Once received by NOAA Fisheries, these data are extensively checked for quality. Each record represents the summary of all the observations made for a given taxa in a given year from each 20km by 20km grid square; counts and weights are statistical estimates. The original dataset, provided by OBIS-USA, contains all distribution records. The dataset in OBIS Seamap is a subset of the original dataset, only containing marine mammal, seabird and/or sea turtle records.
