Description
Bedford Basin is a marine embayment encircled by the municipality of Halifax region, which is the most highly populated area in the Canadian Atlantic zone. In 1991, a time series was established to record the weekly state of the plankton ecosystem in this basin. The strategy of regular and perpetual sampling provides data to assess environmental variability at the weekly, monthly, seasonal, annual and decadal time scales. more

The monitoring program was an extension of a sampling program in the Bedford Basin conducted by researchers at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography since the mid 1960s. Plankton data collected as part of the sampling program has been archived in the Fisheries and Oceans BioChem database. This dataset is the OBIS view of the BioChem series where collector in ('BedfordBasin_Pdickie_phytoplankton','BedfordBasin_Pdickie_zooplankton'). Both phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance are reported as numbers per cubic metre. These data are for display on the OBIS portal and associated mapping programs and for download for end-user analysis. This OBIS dataset will be expanded with more plankton collections from the time series as they become digitized/available. The following reports on the OBIS schema fields provided for in this dataset: Res_Name, DateLastModified, InstitutionCode, CollectionCode, ScientificName, CatalogNumber, Latitude, Longitude, BasisOfRecord, Kingdom, Genus, Species, YearCollected, MonthCollected, DayCollected, Phylum, ClassName, OrderName, Family, Subgenus, Subspecies, JulianDay, Locality, Notes (AphiaID: value).
