Description
The Bergen Telemetry Network is a node of >80 acoustic receivers around the city of Bergen in western Norway. The Bergen Telemetry Network was established in 2020 with financing from the Environmental Directorate. From 2020-present, nearly 300 salmonids have been tagged around the Osterfjord north of Bergen to track migration of smolt and adult salmon and sea trout through the river and fjord. more

The Bergen Telemetry Network is a node of >80 acoustic receivers around the city of Bergen in western Norway. Bergen is one of the world's hotspots for fisheries and fisheries research and is the site of some of the most dramatic fjords in Norway. The Bergen Telemetry Network was established in 2020 with financing from the Environmental Directorate. The BTN received upgrades from the hydropower company BKK and from two Norwegian Research Council projects (PaCE and LaKES) for tracking salmonids. From 2020-present, nearly 300 salmonids have been tagged around the Osterfjord north of Bergen to track migration of smolt and adult salmon and sea trout through the river and fjord. Future projects include additional tagging of salmonids as well as research on habitat use of spiny dogfish, urban ecology of wrasse, and more. The network is funded through at least 2023 with plans to continue operations for ongoing monitoring. The network is led by Dr. Robert Lennox and Dr. Knut Wiik Vollset at NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, Laboratory for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries.
