Description

The UN Restoration Decade aims to prevent, halt, or reverse ecosystem degradation worldwide. The city of Bergen, a leading maritime city, will undertake a multi-year restoration project to improve fish habitat and enhance ecosystem services in the city fjord for local society. This reflects a commitment to strengthen natural capital, support citizen welfare, and promote green tourism activities such as urban fishing, swimming, diving, and boating. Our project partners Bergen Kommune and Bergen Aquarium, together with the research institutes NORCE and IMR, will combine movement ecology and ecotoxicology to assess restoration efforts in the urban fjord. By studying ecosystem conditions before, during, and after physical restoration, the project will deliver critical knowledge for local management, support adaptive management, and contribute to long-term monitoring of this coastal ecosystem, positioning Bergen as a model for sustainable urban marine restoration.
