The "Maatschappij van de Brugse Zeevaartinrichtingen (MBZ)" is an autonomous port company (former semi-governmental institution), which has to operate, develop, maintain and promote the port of Zeebrugge and Bruges. MBZ acts as port authority and decides on the concession or letting of port facilities and grounds.
The assignment of MBZ includes amongst others:
technical matters:
- to prepare and to call for tenders of large infrastructural works like the building of quay walls
- to prepare and to call for tenders of superstructural works like buildings, warehouses, cranes, etc.
- to maintain existing superstructure and infrastructure
- to support port customers in the building of their terminals, if necessary
- to operate bridges, locks, port cranes
- to supply water and electric power in the port area
- to start and maintain projects on ICT
nautical matters:
- to controll and organise port traffic, on the water as well as on land
- to maintain security and safety in the port
- to organise guarding and inspection within the boundaries of the port area
commercial matters:
- to continuously look for new customers, who can further develop the port
- to participate in exhibitions and trade missions
- to distribute documentation and information
- to maintain public relations
other matters:
- to make studies and surveys
- to bring about a balance between nature and economics
- etc.
