The I.O. is by far the largest among the five HCMR institutes. Its personnel consists of 38 research and functional scientists (with Ph.D.), 75 technical scientists (mostly with B.Sc. or M.Sc., a few Ph.D. holders), along with support staff of 19 technicians and 29 administrators based both in Anavissos and Crete. Its various land-based laboratories and offices are housed in the 6,500 m2 building of TRITON in Anavissos, Attica, and the 3000 m2 research building in Gournes, Heraklion, Crete. The I.O. also operates the 61m, 800 ton R/V AEGAEO (with accommodation for 21 scientists), the submersible THETIS (1 pilot and 1 scientist) with a diving capability of 600 m depth, as well as the ROVs Super-Achilles (1000m diving capability) and Max Rover (2000m diving capability). The Director is a member of the HCMR Board of Directors.
