The University of Cantabria has a group of over 40 scientists and engineers working in the coastal
zone. Academic and technical staff, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers constitute an
interdisciplinary group heavily involved in national and international research projects. The University
of Cantabria has also several international academic programs in the field of ICZM oriented to graduate
studies and capacity building of professionals. The PhD program on Marine Science and Technology
has been has been distinguished with the Excellence Award by the Spanish Ministry of Science and
Education. The University of Cantabria is also offering a degree on Harbour Engineering funded by the
American States Organization for Latin-American consultants and experts.
The University of Cantabria is founder of the first Spanish consortium of public administrations,
consultants and research institutions which main goal is the development of tools and methodologies
for ICZM. The faculty members and researchers have published extensively in leading scientific
journals, and participate in international conferences. The research groups have intense collaborations
with several institutions in the Europe, the US and Japan.
