Ocean and Coastal Engineering Research Group (UNICAN-GIOC)
GIOC has a long experience in physical and numerical modelling as well as in field measurements. GIOC is fully involved with R&D Spanish or international programmes independently or jointly with universities, institutes or companies
world wide. Under NATO, British Council, National Research Programmes and European Research Frameworks and other EU funds the Group has co-ordinated several projects with the involvement of U.S., European, Spanish and Latin-
American institutions. Furthermore, the group members collaborate with Spanish and international ports and coastal authorities in subjects related to coastal management, coastal protection, coastal hazards, port development and
associated regulations. Probably one of the most important contributions in this field has been the development of the Coastal Modelling System (SMC), an integrated coastal modelling tool that is being extensively used by Spanish
administrations and consultants. This system is currently being implemented in several countries worldwide.
