Problem definition: Year-to year variations in biotic and environmental data may be strong to either detect significant changes in ecological phenomena as biodiversity or to determine the impacts of threats. Then, longer series of data may reveal trends and help to detect deviations from a baseline (standard or norm). To this end, monitoring, i.e. the long-term, continuous or periodic assessment of biological and other environmental variables is necessary. In contrast to common practice, monitoring should not be performed on 1 or 2 variables independently. Several interrelated biotic and environmental variables should be monitored simultaneously in order to unravel also causal relationships. Objectives: In the Dutch delta area some key locations (during the pilot phase in the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde) functional and structural variables of the ecosystems will be monitored at regular intervals during a period of at least 10 years. Aims is to assess the extent and causes of long-term changes in ecosystems and biodiversity, to indicate threats to a system, to obtain basic data for models, and to indicate forcing factors in the systems. One part of the measurements will lay an emphasis on the temporal variation (sampling at weekly or monthly intervals), another oart on spatial variation (sampling at seasonal to annual intervals). The variables to be determined are: water (CTC, transmissio/fluorimeter, vertical profile suspended matter, N, P. Si, ureum, POC, chlorophyl in SPM, fluoremetry), primary production in water, zooplankton (species, numbers) phytoplankton (number toxic algae), macrozoobenthos larvae, microphytobenthos production, sediment (grain size, C/N chlorophyl), macrozoobenthos (species, biomass, numbers), fish The programme will be performed in cooperation with RIVO and RIKZ |
