As part of the Long-Term Vision 2030 for Flanders, the Monitoring Effects Development Outlines (MONEOS) project was established. There, half-tide eb canals are envisaged. The 2008 MONEOS final report states the following: ‘Sedimentary substances cannot be sampled in a tide-dependent manner. Tidal channels are not suitable here because it is only a snapshot of a very short faze in the tide with sometimes strongly deviating values compared to the tidal mean observation. After all, at tide change, suspended matter sinks. Moreover, it is practically not easy to sample several stations exactly during the short period of tide. Half-tide runs can give a better picture. However, within the ebb or flood current, current velocities and parameters linked to suspended solids often fluctuate strongly. Therefore, linking these parameters to measurement of flow velocity and direction is a must, even in half-tide tides.’ |
