Abstract
The spatial and temporal variability of bottom shear stress is one of the main factors controlling bottom dynamics. Sand banks in coastal areas are particularly affected by large spatial and temporal bottom friction variations due to the complexity of local bathymetry and the impact of tidal effects. In this work the wave effect at the Kwinte Bank (Belgian coast) is assessed by means of a comparison of "current shear stresses" in presence of waves calculated from high frequency flow measurements with "waves plus currents shear stresses" based on models from literature. The consequences of the temporal variability of shear stresses are analyzed and interpreted using sediment concentration measurements and grain size distribution around the sand bank.
