The consolidation behavior of dredged material is studied using experiments, in-situ measurements and computer simulations. The experiments are aimed at obtaining the necessary empirical laws for the model parameters, i.e. permeability and effective stress. Results are presented of the experimental study of the enhancement of dewatering by gravitational drainage. The unified theory for sedimentation and consolidation is briefly reviewed. The major problems, which presently limit the predictive capacities of mathematical consolidation models, are discussed.
