Abstract
Since 1976, several full scale and model test programs have been carried out in order to investigate the effect of mud on ship behaviour. A review of and a critical comparison between test results is given, as well as an indication of possibilities for further research in this field. Aspects of special importance to manoeuvring and control (resistance, propulsion, rudder farces) are emphasized but closely related topics (interface deformation, squat effects, rheology are mentioned as well.
