Abstract
A list of behavioral elements (action patterns, poses and vocalisations) was made in observing birds of two Alcidae-species, Alca torda (L.), razorbill, and Fratercula arctica (L.), puffin. The birds lived in a cage (with sea water basin) and had been caught as nestling two years earlier in Newburgh, Scotland. The behavioural elements observed could be categorized in: individual, agonistic and sexual behaviour. Pair formation took place for the first time during the year of observation. Descriptions and drawings after photographs were made. Quantitative information about some of the most conspicuous patterns was obtained.
