Abstract
The density and pattern of settlement of Balanus balanoides vary greatly around Britain. This is attributed to differences in larval dispersion resulting from the configuration of the coast and its orientation relative to the prevailing winds. The differing availability of the cyprids determines the pattern and density of settlement and thereby the stability of the resulting population.
