Abstract
The suitability of the freshwater rotifer B. calyciflorus was investigated in African catfish larvae, C. gariepinus, at the end of yolk sac resorption. This live food was compared to dry (Ewos larvstart C20) or mixed (B. calyciflorus + Ewos C20) diets. After a 14 day-experiment, survival rates of 99.7, 93.7 and 98% were obtained in the groups fed with rotifer, artificial or mixed diets respectively. However, rotifers as unique food supply did not ensure a satisfactory growth rate, since specific growth rate reached 10.3%.d.-1 with this live food whereas it reached 13.2%.d.-1 with Ewos C20 and 17. 7%.d-1 with the mixed diet. This latter regimen provided the best apparent net protein utilization (NPU: 26.3%). A precocious weaning experiment showed that the best growth rate and food utilization can be obtained by feeding the larvae with a mixed diet (B. calyciflorus + EWOS) during the first seven days and then with 100% dry food.
