Larval rearing of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, using an upwelling conical tank recirculation system
Chavez, D.R. (1992). Larval rearing of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, using an upwelling conical tank recirculation system. MSc Thesis. RUG: Gent. 56 pp.
A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate different designs of tank recirculation systems which would give a better representative of survival, are easy to handle and maintain, and fit for small scale experimental set-up. The system developed (upwelling conical tank recirculation system) was further optimized to test the larval performance of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, taken from a broodstock fed with a diet containing low amounts of (n-3) HUFA. Dietary treatments used were Artemia enriched with coconut oil emulsion, E50 (a self-emulsifying oil containing 50% HUFA), and E50+20% Vitamin C. Results showed that survival would still be high but with low metamorphosis for the E50 fed treatment and a lower survival for the coconut oil fed treatment. The effect of Vitamin C on weight and stress resistance is clearly demonstrated.
