Abstract
Groundwater contamination, clean up and remediation is an important and topical issue in today's world. This book addresses many of the technical issues that now need to be addressed and provides an important source for innovative methodologies currently being introduced in Europe and else-where and reviews many of the more established methodologies. Knowledge and understanding of the processes governing the transport of both the common and the more emerging contaminants through the soil unsaturated zone to an aquifer are essential for predictive modelling of specific clean up techniques and indeed for developing prognoses of plume development. The book presents several new methodologies and identifies a number of useful indicators which allow a better understanding of biogeochemical processes as a basis for environmental models. The combined use of the process understanding and modelled prognoses will help point water managers towards better management of water resources. The methodologies and case studies offer a valuable reference set for hydrogeologists, the research community and practitioners in government and public institutions, those interested in soil and groundwater contamination in general and all students of the sub-surface environment.
