The revision of Neogene otoliths of the myctophid genus Diaphus, based on extensive otolith collections in the Aquitaine Basin, in Southeastern France, northern Italy, Mediterranean Spain, the Paratethys and the North Sea Basin, has proved the validity of fourteen nominal species, among which two are new: Diaphus befralai and D. cavallonis. None of these species has been recorded previously from Oligocene deposits, and only four are still living today.
