Abstract
    The study ‘Sediment strategy in the Beneden-Zeeschelde’, within the framework of Agenda of the Future of the Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Commission, is a cooperation between Flanders Hydraulics, the University of Antwerp (ECOBE) and the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (AQWEST). This study is conducted to underpin the optimization of the sediment dumping strategy in the Beneden-Zeeschelde, the downstream part of the Scheldt Estuary in Belgium, in view of the environmental permit renewal after 2017 and taking into account expected developments such as changing in sand extraction strategies, construction of the Oosterweel tunnel and the risk to a hyper turbidity shift and its ecological consequences.
    This is one of the 8 reports of this study, it describes and evaluates the ecological potential of a few sandy sediment disposal alternatives, based on their numeric model output. The study has pinpointed a few alternative disposal sites which can increase ecological potentials and decrease upstream risks if parts of the sand of maintenance dredging can be disposed in the Putten van Kallo near (Fort Filip). This report focuses mainly on the potential ecological impact of sand disposal scenarios, using f.e. numeric model output for assessing the impact on macrobenthos.
