Abstract
This special issue is the result of the second workshop organised by the BioFlow1 network in September 2003 at Rostock University (Germany). BioFlow is a consortium of 18 European institutes located in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. All of these groups are working with biological flume tanks of varying sizes and designs. Although the focus of research and expertise in the different laboratories is very diverse, all groups are working on the interface between aquatic biology and hydrodynamics. It is a relatively small, and by nature very interdisciplinary, field where the scientists have to cope with the conventions, theories, cultures and jargon from the world of biology, as well as those from the world of physicists and engineers.
